Were children kept in their rooms in the 60s?

So I've been watching the show, 'Bewitched' for the last few days. I've noticed that Tabitha, the daughter, is kept in her playpen in her room for most of the time. Is this just a way the show got around the child working laws? Or was this common practice back then?
